It’s a treat to come to know a family of whiskies from the same distillery. Each one always unique in its own way but still reminiscent to the core of where it came from. The Aberlour 12 is a perfect example of this. Don’t get me wrong, when given the chance between this and the 16 for a daily dram, I’m quite likely to pick out the 16 being it is one of my all time favorites, but that is no reason to dismiss this brighter, younger sibling. Every whisky has its day.
Just like the 16 year, this whisky is double cask finished between American oak and ex-Sherry barrels giving it a very lively and rich sweetness that only the combination of ex bourbon and sherry can do. The nose kicks off with cinnamon and strawberry rhubarb pie backed with some fresh citrus zest. On the palate rolling warm citrus and cinnamon combine with the characters of deep sherry sweetness along with chocolate and toffee notes leaving a very warm and slightly drying finish.
Overall this is a bottle absolutely worthy of its cheaper price in comparison to the 16 which is understandably a bit more. To the growing enthusiast expanding their collection, I say make sure you have both on your shelf.
