Aberlour, not in any stretch of the mind an underdog in the single malt whisky game, but still in my eyes there is not enough credit given to the amazing liquids this distillery creates for our sipping enjoyment. Their 16 year old, part of their standard offering, is a shining example of what they are so very good at delivering . Like many other Scottish distilleries out there, Aberlour uses a double maturation method of traditional bourbon casks and sherry butts in combination to age and shape their whisky. This leaves a very sweet and rounded depth to the flavor getting the best of both worlds from two distinct barrel flavors.
On the nose, strawberry Fruit Roll Up. I’m serious. Or maybe you preferred Fruit By the Foot instead? Clementines and fresh flowers round out whatever childhood fruit snack strawberry flavor you preferred most, but forgot all about how much you loved until now. All of those fruits combine together with gentle spices for an outstanding flavor that only a few more years of time can offer compared to most whiskies of 10 or 12 years in age. This is a true "any-time" malt that is as good out of your friend's flask at a summer concert, as it is poured out for a nightcap in the middle of winter, as it is back around again on a cool spring weekend morning when you poke your head out of your tent after the season's first camping trip. Trust me, I've had it every which way and they're all great.
